The Manilva district includes the village of Manilva, the town of Sabinillas, the Port of Duquesa and the seaside village of Castillo de la Duquesa. It is a diverse area, popular with tourists and residents for its beaches and seaside promenade, traditional village and modern town, beautiful countryside and an international marina, full of bars and restaurants.

Golfers love it too, as it has one 18-hole golf course, and is very close to the world-class courses of Sotogrande, on one side, and the Casares and Estepona golf courses on the other. Property in Manilva is significantly cheaper than Sotogrande, so by choosing to live or holiday in a more affordable area, but just a short drive from some of the very best courses in Europe, you get the best of both worlds.

In this post, we’re going to give you the lowdown on the golf courses in and around Manilva and tell you about the golf properties in Manilva and Casares, which allow you to live the dream, right on the fairways.

La Duquesa Golf Course

We have to start with La Duquesa Golf Course, as it’s the only golf course in Manilva, and at the centre of the golf community in Manilva. This is an 18-hole course, designed by Robert Trent Jones and is located just behind the busy port of Duquesa. It is one of the best value courses on the Costa del Sol, with green fees at €40 per person in the low season and €45 in the high season without buggy, and €65 with a buggy. There’s also a practice area, where you can get 16 balls for €1 and there’s a restaurant with a great value set lunch menu to enjoy.

It is a challenging 18-hole course which has faced criticism for the quality of the greens and tees in the past. However, the team at the course have been working hard to improve the condition of the course and the feedback from golfers is improving all the time, with one player on TripAdvisor calling it “the best value walking course on the coast” and another saying “We love it – greens are excellent and the green staff are doing an excellent job.”

There are memberships available at the club too, and the club house is a venue for events throughout the year. Highly recommended for good value golf in a stunning setting, with excellent views.

Something for the whole family

If the younger members of the family also want to have a go at golf, a fun way to do it is to visit the Roman Oasis Mini Golf Course in Manilva. It’s open from May to the end of October, has a bar and a kids’ play area and a small menu to enjoy too. Not for the serious golfer, but good fun for sure.

Golf courses near Manilva

Within just a 20-minute drive from Manilva village you have four fantastic golf courses, heading in the direction of Estepona.

The closest is Doña Julia Golf Club, right on the border of the Manilva and Casares municipalities and just a few minutes’ drive from La Duquesa. It was designed by Spanish golfer Antonio Garrido and is an 18-hole, par 71 course, which offers magnificent views and has been rated 8.35 by their visitors. It is slightly more expensive than La Duquesa, but still good value for the area. Green fees, including buggy are €70 in low season and €80 in high season and there are offers for early bird and twilight sessions.

According to LeadingCourses.com it is a great course; “The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee). Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes. What you notice about Doña Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless. The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer.”

Finca Cortesin

Finca Cortesin is located in Casares, just a few minutes’ drive from Manilva and is consistently rated as one of Spain’s very best golf courses. It’s so prestigious that it has hosted the Volvo Match Play Championship three times and is the 2023 official venue of the Solheim Cup, welcoming some of Europe’s and America’s best golfers this September.

Finca Cortesin golf club is an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Cabell B. Robinson with a 5* experience and top-notch service. The fairways and greens are always in optimal condition and the setting is stunning too. Finca Cortesin is ranked second place by LeadingCourses.com in the Top 10 Golf Courses in Spain and is called “outstanding”. Of course, all this excellence doesn’t come cheap and green fees are €320, including buggy.

Golf in Estepona

A little further along the coast from Casares you’ll find two great golf courses in Estepona.

Estepona Golf is an 18-hole course which claims to offer an “unforgettable game” and you can play 9 or 18 holes. There are offers for packs of Green Fees and Twilight Sessions for 55€ for green fee and buggy.

Valle Romano has an impressive 18-hole golf course designed by Cabell B. Robinson, which is recommended for being well maintained, challenging yet not too difficult, with significant elevation changes and memorable holes. They also have a driving range and practice bunker.

Golf in Sotogrande

Drive towards Gibraltar for 20 minutes and you have even more to choose from, in the golfing hotspot of Sotogrande. There are a huge number of courses in this area, but we’re looking at three of the most popular – La Cañada, La Reserva and the number 1 course in Spain, Valderrama. You can also browse properties in Sotogrande on our website.

Closest to Manilva is the La Cañada Golf Course, a 15-minute drive from Manilva village. It is an 18-hole golf course, designed by Dave Thomas and Robert Trent Jones, which was actually the first public golf course in this area. It is highly regarded as a course which provides a varied round, with fast and very well-maintained greens, large wooded areas and fantastic views. They aim to provide affordable golf, and a high-quality course and facilities. Green fees start at €62 for low season to €82 for high season, excluding buggies.

Just a few minutes further into Sotogrande and you’ll find La Reserva Club, an impressive 18-hole championship course, designed by Cabell B. Robinson. It is said to be a “must-play for any golfer visiting Southern Spain” and is ranked third out of all golf courses in Spain by LeadingCourses.com.  It’s a long course, with wide fairways and large greens and is meticulously cared for so that the experience is the best it possibly can be. It has hosted a large number of golf events and is a favourite in the area for the 5* facilities and excellent design. Green fees start from €209.

Last but by no means least, is the number 1 golf course in Spain, Valderrama, just a 17-minute drive from the centre of Manilva village. Real Club Valderrama is a Par 71 Championship Course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior in 1974 and has been considered the best course in Spain and one of the best courses in the world for many years now. Known as the Augusta of Europe, it has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Volvo Masters and many more championships and is always in the very best condition. Described as a playable course for golfers of most abilities by the Top100GolfCourses.com, they say “play Valderrama and prepare to be impressed… very impressed”.
